The Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) drives campaigns that seek to win structural change by directly taking on the corporations responsible for pillaging communities of color and working-class communities and harming our environment. Through partnerships with organizations involved in local racial, economic, environmental, and educational justice campaigns, we provide strategic campaign coordination and campaign infrastructure with an explicit racial justice analysis.

The Deputy Director is responsible for externally pushing forward ACRE’s key program areas in coordination with other ACRE staff, external partners and allies. This Deputy Director position is focused on ACRE’s Climate and Environmental Justice program, which is working to hold corporations and Wall Street accountable for driving our climate crisis and targeting toxic industries in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities that contaminate our air, water, and land.

The Climate Finance Deputy Director is a Grade 3 position and will report to the Campaign Director for ACRE’s Climate and Environmental Justice.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identifying potential partners and allies, building relationships with them, and creating pathways for collaborative work with them
  • Regularly assessing the changing campaign and political landscape, then shifting campaign strategy as needed
  • Build and maintain relationships with financial regulators and relevant political offices
  • Coordinate with Senior Organizer and Campaign Director to identify key spaces and moments to center and amplify frontline voices in climate finance advocacy
  • Coordinate with Deputy Research Director and Senior Researcher to identify research needs and products that will help strengthen existing climate finance analysis to prioritize racial and economic justice outcomes
  • Work with partners to advance ACRE’s analysis
  • Serving as a resource for technical assistance and capacity-building for partner organizations
  • Work with communications team to represent ACRE publicly regarding climate finance work, including potential media appearances
  • Help convene national meetings and calls with partners or the general public
  • Represent ACRE in national climate finance spaces
  • Contributing creatively to a forward-thinking team

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to progressive social change and racial justice, a familiarity with the issues that are central to ACRE’s work and a passion for ACRE’s vision and mission
  • At least five years of experience working in a strategic role on campaigns to change corporate behavior
    • Experience working for or in coalition with climate or environmental justice groups is a plus.
    • Familiarity with climate or environmental justice issues, policies, and legislation at the local, state and federal level a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop campaign strategy
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Experience developing, coordinating, managing, and executing campaigns that involve multiple organizations and stakeholders
  • Experience laterally managing staff at other organizations over whom there is no direct authority
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments
  • Demonstrated commitment to community and/or labor organizing and experience working with women and communities of color for social change
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with organizers
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise, make contingency plans, and shift plans as needed
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, with light supervision
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours when needed
  • Ability to travel extensively (when it is safe, likely not until 2022)

Salary scale range $82,000 – $95,000. LGBTQ, women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Compensation is commensurate with experience. Position includes excellent benefits. Location is flexible but Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, San Antonio, Philadelphia, Detroit, Washington D.C., Oakland, or San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area is preferred. There is a 10% cost of living adjustment for people working out of the New York City, Los Angeles, Bay Area, and DC metro areas. Position includes excellent benefits. We are aiming to hire for an August 23rd start date.
