Job Summary

This position serves as the North American technical expert, as well as a global expert on issues involving and relating to Sustainability and Product Stewardship issues for Saint-Gobain North America (SGNA).  Within these technical areas are subsets of required expertise, including industrial hygiene, safety, social, economic, and environmental issues, as well as environmental regulatory compliance.

The Sustainability and Product Stewardship Director position is significant to our strategy to “Make the World a Better Home” through green building, eco-design and innovation. This includes, but is not limited to, development of transparency declarations to communicate attributes associated with the ingredients in relevant Saint-Gobain products in order to ensure consistent and accurate communication of product transparency data used for the purpose of market specific, product incentive systems.  The incentive systems include, but are not limited to, LEEDv4, Living Building Challenge, Well Building, and their associated transparency communication tools, such as the Health Product Declaration, Declare, Pharos, Cradle-2-Cradle, etc.

This role also serves as the North American technical expert, as well as a global expert on issues involving and relating to the broader topic of sustainability with particular focus on products, their ingredients, their life cycle and regulatory impacts. The Sustainability and Product Stewardship Director must have a strong understanding of commercial, regulatory and emerging issues in areas that affect our businesses and products, as well as international product development.  The position will also work closely with the various Marketing teams for all SGNA businesses.

The Sustainability and Product Stewardship Director will provide leadership by assessing and managing potential risks associated with Saint-Gobain’s products, including the ingredients that are selected to be included in our products, the processes that produce our produces, and the manner in which the products are ultimate used. This includes worldwide responsibility for coordination of product material health transparency declaration programs.

The Sustainability and Product Stewardship Director will have an understanding of the state, federal and international regulations and emerging stakeholder expectations as it relates to environment, health, safety and social issues and the potential impact those expectations and requirements may have on the company’s products, processes and uses of our products.  The incumbent will support the approximately 15,000 employees at all manufacturing sites in NA in optimal raw material selection and use as well as be the voice on customer questions related to the health and safety impacts of our products.

Essential Functions:

Provides leadership and guidance in matters relating to ESG, product stewardship and sustainability in North America and internationally as part of the world-wide working groups. Identifies, develops, implements, and maintains the necessary elements to sustain an effective Product Stewardship and Sustainability Management program within Saint-Gobain NA, as well as help to create similar programs within other CSG Regions as needed.

Develop and implement policies and procedures to provide consistent process tools to the SG businesses for product material health transparency declaration programs and in NA, as well as worldwide, in the areas of: raw material review and approval, risk characterization, SDS and label development, external customer support, TSCA reporting requirements and hazard communication program development, REACH, FIFRA, GHS, Internal sustainable product and process development guidelines and training, internal sustainable operations process development including waste, water and CO2 reduction programs, life cycle assessment program development and implementation, HPDs or equivalent as well as EPDs.

The position will also partner with internal business groups and the environmental functions in conducting life cycle assessment, risk assessment and aspect / impact analyses, track regulatory changes, determine potential applicability and develop/implement responding action plans. An important part of this role will be to collaborate with Research and Development, Marketing, Communications and EHS staff to ensure consistency in ESG, product stewardship, and sustainability related activities in North America as well as globally.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Engineering/Science discipline; Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or Industrial Hygiene
  • MS Degree in Engineering/Science discipline preferred
  • MBA preferred
  • 10-12 years Product Stewardship, Sustainability, EHS&S program leadership experience required as well as a solid understanding of green chemistry principles
  • 5+ years management experience in leading teams to assess inputs and outputs of product development, including raw material choice(s), disposal practices, reuse and recycling opportunities and assessment of supplier’s impact on company’s product stewardship and sustainability efforts.
  • Specialized knowledge and successful track record in the initiation, design, implementation and monitoring of CSR product stewardship, sustainability, health, safety and environmental programs, functions and equipment
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state, and international EHS&S related laws, rules and regulations, as well as emerging sustainability and product stewardship issues.
  • Strong skills and experience in developing and articulating compelling business justification for change.
  • LEED-GA or similar. Relevant EHS&S certifications preferred.
