About the Philadelphia Energy Authority
The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) is an independent municipal authority focused on issues of energy affordability and sustainability for Philadelphia. In early 2016, in partnership with City Council President Darrell Clarke, PEA launched the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects in 4 sectors: city buildings, public schools, low- and moderate-income housing, and small businesses. We believe that energy is an important vehicle for reducing poverty, improving education, strengthening communities and leveraging public investment.

In 2019, PEA was appointed Program Administrator of the Philadelphia Commercial Property-Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) program. C-PACE is a financing tool that commercial property owners can use to pay for energy efficiency, water conservation and renewable energy projects. 

Job Description
Interns are an integral part of PEA. They are critical to expanding our outreach and impact. We offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued expansion of the energy campaign and will provide a balance of valuable civic engagement and entrepreneurial business experience. PEA is uniquely positioned to facilitate discussions regarding innovative energy projects, educate policy development, and lead the implementation of best practices. 

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to assist with the operations of programs within the Energy Campaign. The primary focus of the internship will be working on the C-PACE program. There are many facets to the Philadelphia C-PACE program including marketing, program management, event planning, financial modeling, legal document review, stakeholder engagement and research. The exact scope of work will be designed to complement the intern’s existing skills and desired learning experiences.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Project Review: As PEA receives applications for C-PACE projects, the intern may be asked to review applications, related models, and legal documents. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Event Planning: PEA plans to host a handful of C-PACE events in summer 2020 and the intern will be expected to assist with the planning and execution as necessary. Aside from events, there are meetings with various stakeholders on a weekly basis. The intern will be asked to prepare for and participate in those meetings. 
  • Marketing & Web Design: The intern may be asked to evaluate our current C-PACE marketing activities, track performance against 2020 goals, and propose 2021 marketing plan. We are also in the process of establishing a robust, standalone Philadelphia C-PACE website. Intern duties may involve drafting content, compiling market data and other duties as identified. 
  • Research & Deal Origination: As the Philadelphia C-PACE program expands, there may be the need for detailed research on energy efficiency, water conservation and/or renewable energy projects, market trends, complementary financing tools, and more. 
  • Energy Benchmarking: The intern will be asked to analyze energy and water usage data from commercial buildings throughout the city to identify opportunities for clean energy projects. Additional tasks may include outreach to targeted buildings. 
  • Green Bank: PEA is also in the early stages of establishing a green bank. The Commercial Finance intern may be asked to perform research and analysis, as well as other duties, related to the green bank formation and design. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Demonstrated interest in energy, sustainability, climate change, impact investing, finance, urban studies and/or other relevant topics
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing, web design, program management, event planning, financial modeling, legal document review, stakeholder engagement, and/or research. Experience may be from the workplace, extracurricular clubs, or other activities
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills 
  • Display maturity and a high level of professionalism 
  • Detail oriented and organized 
  • Must be collaborative and enjoy working with others

Additional Information 
The intern will be expected to work for 30-40 hours a week at our office located in Philadelphia City Hall. Interns are encouraged to pursue any applicable funding from their schools. If an accepted intern does not have access to outside funding, PEA will work with the intern to ensure compensation.
