WATERQUALITY SPECIALIST
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED:
Responsible for implementation of specialized sampling programs associated with increasing regulatory requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, such as the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, the Stage 2 Disinfection/Disinfection Byproduct Rule, and the Source Water Protection Program. Implementation includes sample collection, analysis, data entry and reporting. Will perform watershed inspections and maintain and analyze watershed and discharge databases. These sampling programs include treatment process control and regulatory sampling, as well as cover watershed, security, and more expansive distribution system monitoring. Also responsible for investigation of customer water quality concerns. This includes collecting customer requested water quality samples. Responsible for helping maintain and conduct appropriate quality control measures for laboratory procedures. Laboratory analyses may also be performed in the field as well as the laboratory. Responsible for conducting jar tests and focused sampling programs on an as needed basis for process optimization at treatment plants. This position will also complete data entry associated with all aspects of water quality sampling and testing. Responsible for aiding in data validation of SCADA information collection. Responsible for helping to troubleshoot mechanical problems with laboratory instrumentation. This position also is responsible for conducting hydrant flushing on as needed basis.
EXAMPLES OFWORKPERFORMED(Illustrative Only):
Duties include but are not limited to collects water samples using aseptic sampling protocol and EPA required Chain of Custody procedures from different locations in the Water Distribution System– businesses, personal residents, etc. Collects water samples from various locations in the Christina River Basin and Hoopes Reservoir. Performs basic chemical and physical analyses on samples, such as pH, chlorine level, turbidity, organic content, metals, and nutrients and other pertinent water quality parameters as needed. May perform jar tests or focused studies associated with optimizing drinking water treatment. Enters data collected by laboratory in spreadsheets and database and prepares regulatory reports, as well as trains other personnel on computer use. Troubleshoots laboratory instrument repair. Maintains appropriate quality control measures and records on laboratory analyses per EPA requirements. Represents the City at meetings with stakeholders from state and regional regulatory agencies. Flushes water mains throughout the distribution system. Reviews, develops, implements, revises and maintains standard operating procedures per State certification. . Responsible for handling all customer complaints regarding water quality. Conducts community outreach to local schools, home owners, associations and businesses as needed. Performs all related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of some laboratory procedures and operation of laboratory equipment such as colorimeters, spectrophotometer, autoclave, pH meter, and fluoride analyzer. Knowledge of basic water treatment principles and basic chemistry. Knowledge of current and pending water quality regulations. General knowledge of watershed water quality issues. Ability to operate motor vehicle and read maps. Ability to navigate City and surburban streets. Ability to lift at least 30 lbs. Ability to perform arithmetic, use spreadsheets for data entry and graphing, and usedatabase for data entry and regulatory reporting. Ability to follow SOPs and detailed quality control procedures and documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.
