Barbara Moore, Board Member
Barbara Moore retired from her role as the Energy and Sustainability Manager for the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) in 2022. However, her educational journey began at Northeastern University, where she earned a BS degree in Psychology and Statistics. After working as a psychotherapist for 10 years, she realized this was not the career she wanted and decided to start anew.
Her new career began with a BS degree in Construction Management/Civil Engineering from Drexel University. Two days after graduation, Barbara moved to California and started working for a group of private investors as a Project Manager until she returned to Philadelphia in 1994.
After returning to Philadelphia, she began working with the Philadelphia Housing Authority in its Construction Management Department, where she developed new low-income housing projects. Barbara then decided to reinvent herself and explore the planning process for housing, financing, and construction revitalization. She held these roles for 14 years before deciding to enhance her career with a Master’s in Sustainable Design (MSSD) from Philadelphia University. In 2012, the President of PHA appointed her Sustainability Coordinator, and she was later promoted to Sustainability/Energy Manager. Her responsibilities included implementing sustainable practices and policies, creating energy standards, monitoring green initiatives throughout the agency, developing green procurement practices, and providing staff training on environmental best practices.
During her final years of service, she saved the agency over $6 million by implementing energy-saving strategies and purchasing energy more efficiently. Barbara now volunteers with three organizations in the City of Philadelphia.
