Family-Owned Business Goes Solar, Locks In Long-Term Savings

Project Overview

Superior Commercial Kitchens is a multigenerational, family-owned business based in Bensalem. The company provides affordable, high-quality new and refurbished equipment for the Greater Philadelphia region’s restaurants and food service operators.

To lower utility costs, Superior Commercial Kitchens turned to Solarize Greater Philadelphia and partnered with installer Superior Solar Design. A 34.5 kW solar photovoltaic system was completed in 2026, supplying at least 100% of electricity for the corporate headquarters, workshop, and showroom. After taking advantage of available federal tax incentives, Superior Commercial Kitchens is expected to yield significant cost savings, helping to keep the local business operating for years to come.

"I am not doing this for me. I am doing this for my son. I am going to retire soon and he is going to take the business on to make it a fourth generation family business."
- Frank Livolsi, Superior Commercial Kitchens

The Challenges

As a small business facing pressure from rising input costs, Superior Commercial Kitchens is always looking for options to stabilize or reduce expenses. Solar power allows the family-owned businesses to lock in predictable electricity costs for decades, helping the next generation of ownership sustain the business.

Despite the benefits of solar energy, the upfront cost to install a commercial-sized system can pose a major financial barrier. With guidance from Solarize Greater Philadelphia, the Livolsi family was able to take advantage of federal tax incentives. Altogether, the federal investment tax credit reduced installation costs by 40%.

“Superior Solar Design did everything they said they’d do and all in a very professional manner. I was happy with every aspect of Superior Solar. They did a great job.”
- Frank Livolsi, Superior Commercial Kitchens

The Solution

Superior Commercial Kitchens worked with Solarize Greater Philadelphia and installer Superior Solar Design to:

  • Achieve $144,000 estimated lifetime savings
  • Design a system that met at least 100% of energy demand while protecting the roof warranty, limiting roof penetrations and avoiding excess waste
  • Qualify for the 30% ITC and 10% Energy Community incentive for a total 40% credit
"Superior Commercial Kitchens' ownership prepared their company for the future by locking in lower-cost energy. Solar power will reduce costs for this family-run business, saving money for this generation and the next and the next."
- Douglas Davis, Superior Solar Design
