Solar Shed Showcase
August 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Playful Learning Solar Shed is a reliable sanctuary when conventional infrastructure fails. Record-breaking heat waves coupled with severe microbursts recently knocked out power in many communities throughout the surrounding Greater Philadelphia region. The Solar Shed remained completely unaffected and operational. The Solar Shed is completely “off grid” and generates and stores its own power, guaranteeing uninterrupted refrigeration for the City of Philadelphia’s Summer Lunch Program and maintains a safe, shaded retreat during extreme weather, proving that off-grid systems can withstand climate-related shocks without relying on the grid.
Being independent from the grid allows the Solar Shed to serve as an agile, adaptable resilience hub for the entire community. The Solar Shed is a self-sustaining model that can be easily replicated in parks, gardens, and playgrounds anywhere where there aren’t existing facilities to support the Community in times of need.
Off-grid independence transforms the shed into a dependable local lifeline during outages, providing neighborhood residents anywhere with a guaranteed place to charge essential devices, keep temperature-sensitive medication cold, and soon provide access to vital Wi-Fi connectivity if areas of the neighborhood go dark.
