Metered Energy Efficiency Transaction Structure (MEETS) is a new financing approach designed to facilitate long-term, deep energy improvements in commercial buildings, using outside capital and providing a new income stream to building owners.

MEETS addresses barriers to deep energy efficiency investments including owners investing in cost saving benefits that tenants reap, tenants investing in buildings they do not own, and a lack of accuracy in quantifying actual cost and energy use savings. The model aligns the interests of building owners, utilities, ratepayers, tenants, and investors to incentivize deep efficiency investments and an accurate and dynamic measurement of savings.

The Bullitt Center in Seattle is a MEETS pilot project. The model can be applied to deep retrofits in existing buildings as well as to highly efficient new construction projects.

This presentation is intended to provide an overview of MEETS to building owners and managers, utilities, tenants, and any others interested in learning more about this new approach to deep energy efficiency financing.
