At Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia (“HFHP”), we are builders who work alongside, not for, others. We are driven by accountability and defined by our stick-to-itiveness. The Build department directly improves the living conditions of low-income households by creating safe, healthy, affordable dwellings through the construction of new multi- and single-unit housing, rehab projects, and owner-occupied home repair work.

Position Overview 

Apprentice Carpenter is Habitat’s entry level carpentry position. Apprentice Carpenter work directly with their more experienced counterparts carrying out basic carpentry tasks on Habitat sites and within Habitat’s facilities.  Apprentice Carpenter perform onsite construction tasks necessary for completing new construction, rehab, and owner-occupied residential repair projects; perform technical carpentry repairs while working with key HFHP staff, subcontractors and homeowners; effectively utilize the labor and enthusiasm of Habitat’s volunteer workforce; uphold HFHP’s quality and safety standards; work as a community partner; and promote Habitat’s mission to eliminate substandard housing and revitalize neighborhoods

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Basic Carpentry Tasks:
  • Under supervision, operate as entry level carpentry support for residential construction, rehab and owner-occupied construction projects- interior and exterior, ranging from structural repair to finish work, supporting Habitat’s experienced carpentry staff on site and in Habitat facilities
  • Gain experience in performing common residential carpentry tasks such as: framing, siding. insulation, door/window installation, trim, flooring, and kitchen and bath finishes.
  • Work in a way that prioritizes client, self, volunteer and coworker health and safety.
  1. Site, Materials and Equipment Handling:
  • Gather, load and unload materials, transport them to work areas, and ensure work areas are clean and organized.
  • Support maintenance of Habitat work vehicle, tools, and equipment.
  • Implement HFHP safety practices and help monitor employees, subcontractors, and volunteers to adhere to these standards.
  • Support administrative tasks required by carpentry staff, like expense tracking.
  1. Volunteer Engagement & Coordination:
  • Work with Habitat staff to supervise and train volunteers in carpentry tasks and safety practices as applicable.
  • Exemplify a positive and respectful work attitude.

Qualifications

Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:  

  • Prior entry level knowledge of carpentry, basic plumbing and electrical – successful completion of one year apprenticeship, carpentry program or Habitat’s Carpentry Fellowship preferred.
  • Willingness to be trained in construction, carpentry and building science principles
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Prior experience working with volunteers preferred

Physical Requirements to Perform Duties:  
Ability to perform all construction duties, such as lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing extension ladders and scaffolding; working in unconditioned workspaces in the heat of summer and cold of winter

Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, paid vacation, sick time, and holidays.  Hourly rate is based on experience and demonstrated skill level.
