The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA), an independent municipal authority, is working to build a robust, equitable clean energy economy in Philadelphia. Chartered by City Council and the Mayor in 2010, PEA is a quasi-governmental entity based in City Hall. In 2016, in partnership with then City Council President Darrell Clarke, PEA launched the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects to create 10,000 jobs. Through 2023, PEA has helped launch over $904MM in projects and created 7,648 jobs. We focus on municipal assets, schools, low- and moderate-income housing, small businesses and commercial and industrial projects and programs. We view energy as a high impact tool for reducing poverty, improving education, strengthening communities and leveraging public investment.

Job Title: Senior Manager, Communications
Reports to: Vice President of Policy and Strategic Partnerships
Number of Direct Reports: 0-1
Location: Hybrid – partial work from home (Philadelphia residency required) and partial at our office at 30 S. 15th St., Suite 801, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19102. Less than 20% travel required.

Exempt/Non-Exempt Status: Exempt, Full-time

Position Summary: PEA is expanding its team to include a new Senior Manager of Communications. The Sr. Manager will be responsible for developing and executing PEA’s communications and marketing strategies. 

The Sr. Manager will develop and refine messaging for PEA’s key audiences under the supervision of the Vice President of Policy and Strategic Partnerships. The Sr. Manager will work closely with the directors of each program and functional area (residential, commercial, operations and workforce) to identify programmatic communications and marketing needs. This person will develop key messaging documents related to grant development and will work closely with various teams in applying for and reporting related to various funding types. 

Key Success Factors: Our ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communications skills and have a highly collaborative approach. Experience with mission-driven storytelling is a plus. The successful candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple tasks at once. They will be confident working in a fast-paced environment and be a natural self-starter focused on results rather than solely tasks. A passion for Philadelphia is a must.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead development and implementation of an organization-wide communication and marketing strategy, ensuring messaging alignment across all communication channels.
  • Develop and implement an editorial calendar that helps drive message consistency and leverages key program milestones throughout the calendar year. 
  • Collect and leverage content from program teams to develop communications and marketing collateral including but not limited to website content, one-pagers, and presentation decks. 
  • Drive social media strategy across all platforms. 
  • Develop public relations strategy to elevate PEA’s ongoing programmatic work with key audiences.
  • Prepare press releases and support staff remarks for PEA- or partner-led media events. 
  • Help fulfill incoming media requests by connecting with and preparing the appropriate staff person for on-record opportunities. 
  • Manage consultants that support communications and marketing strategy including but not limited to graphic designers and public relations professionals. 
  • Develop and oversee the publication of PEA’s annual report.
  • Oversee the end-to-end process of updating the company’s website, ensuring it aligns with organizational goals and user experience best practices. Will include management of various vendors and partners.
  • Maintain updated organizational boilerplate language and templates to ensure consistent and accurate messaging when staff engages with partners and the public and/or submits applications including grants and award submittals. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree 
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex topics. Experience with mission-driven storytelling and multi-platform communications is desired.
  • Experience developing and implementing organization-wide communications and marketing strategies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work on deadline
  • A passion for Philadelphia and an ability to work with diverse stakeholders to advance PEA’s mission
  • An understanding of and/or demonstrated interest in climate and clean energy 
  • Proficiency in MS Office (PowerPoint, in particular), Google Suite, and social media platforms
  • Experience with WordPress preferred
  • Philadelphia residency required within 6 months of date of hire

Salary & Benefits: $80,000 to $115,000 commensurate with experience, plus competitive benefits package including a generous healthcare package, retirement and fringe benefits, paid time off and government holidays.
