Compensation: Paid (8 – 10 weeks), 30 – 40 hrs/week

About the Philadelphia Energy Authority

The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) is an independent municipal authority chartered by City Council and the Mayor in 2010, focused on energy affordability and sustainability issues in Philadelphia. In 2016, with the leadership of City Council President Darrell Clarke, PEA launched the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects. Through 2021, PEA has helped launch over $291MM in projects and created 2500+ jobs. We focus on municipal assets, schools, low- and moderate-income housing, small businesses, and commercial and industrial projects and programs. We view energy as a high-impact tool for reducing poverty, improving education, strengthening communities, and leveraging public investment.

Job Description

The Intern will be a detail-oriented team player with a high level of comfort managing multiple competing priorities and needs. The intern will support the PEA’s Workforce Development Unit’s planning and implementation of the Bright Solar Futures (BSF) Summer Program at Frankford High School. This includes coordination of trips, scheduling guest speakers, photo opportunities, and related support. In addition, the intern will work with the Workforce Development Coordinator’s responsibilities related to all Workforce Programs.  Experience working with marginalized populations, workforce development, data collection, and/or community-based organizations would be beneficial. This internship will provide the intern with practical experience in program strategy and coordination, development, problem-solving, and a greater understanding of solar energy in this clean energy space. The intern will be asked to support other programs or projects as needed. Specifically, the intern will:

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision and instruction for small groups as instructed by Solar teacher
  • Provide ongoing assistance to program staff, students, and volunteers during programs
  • Oversee lunch and student breaks
  • Maintain the daily level of service and attendance reports
  • Provide leading support for field trip coordination
  • Collect and submit timesheets from students to PEA
  • Lead group programming as assigned by Solar Instructor
  • Liaise between the program and parents as instructed by the Solar teacher and PEA Staff
  • Curate pictures and stories of students, staff, special guests and events to highlight the program on social media outlets and PEA’s website. 

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • A recent graduate from PEA’s  Bright Solar Futures or similar solar installer training program. or current undergrad and/or graduate student (preferred) with a concentration in Secondary Education, Psychology, Social Work, Urban Studies, or other familiar content areas.
  • A demonstrated interest in Philadelphia’s workforce development environment and youth development
  • Have a demonstrated interest in energy, sustainability, climate change, urban education, and/or other relevant topics.
  • A passion for Philadelphia and a desire to support diverse, marginalized communities with dignity and respect.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and project and program management tools like Monday.com.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, some experience with social media a plus.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Must be collaborative and enjoy working with others.
  • Must be willing to complete background checks 
  • Must be willing to travel within the city of Philadelphia
